Yet another Windows Genuine Disadvantage XP Professional Product Key type question

nesta's picture

So yeah, like, it used to be a counterfeit XP Pro tower which I licensed back in late 2006 with the "Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP Professional". Microsoft mailed me the the CD and I used i t do a Windows reinstall, and the disc's been sitting in its mailer next to my PC for the past eighteen months. Until the day before yesterday. Malware took out my operating system, sending it into endless reboot. (the OS is ruined but the drive is still readable and I'll be needing to recover iTunes and plenty of documents from it). So I swapped out the C: drive for a fresh one, booted to the Microsoft disc and began the Windows install. I soon found out that I didn't have a hard copy of my Product Key. The letter from MS accompanying the disc stated that the key had been e-mailed to me. So with the old C: drive attached to my laptop I searched in vain for a copy of the message. I don't understand how I failed to record the key anywhere, not in my PDA, not on a note taped inside the tower, not on the back of the envelope from Microsoft. My bad.

Well I found a Product Key on the Microsoft CD in the Unattend.txt file, and it let me finish the installation. Bad idea, activation wouldn't work with that key. And the nice folk at Microsoft Support couldn't help. They couldn't find any record of my having purchased the WGA Kit despite the fact that I'd purchased two licenses this way in 2006. They rightly lectured me for not keeping better records, although they also suggested that their own systems sometimes lose records as old as mine. They told me to e-mail mswga@microsoft.com with all the particulars, which I did. The automated response from there didn't give me much hope, so I've been surfing for help all day.

An article on the website MyDigitalLife showed me how to extract the old Product Key from the ruined system disc, which I found to be different from the key on the CD, though I don't know why. So I reinstalled XP again, this time using this 'correct' key. But now when I run Activate Windows it fails after "checking for connectivity", with message 45131 stating that "online activation cannot be completed at this time". Perhaps I've run the Windows Activation program too often? I've probably tried it a dozen times in my frustration.

The other interesting site I found this morning was Slated.org with more reasoned discourse on matters related to my troubles than any hundred other sites. So I thought to post here and see if there was anything I could be doing better to get to the bottom of this. I do have a shrink-wrapped copy of WinXP Home that I bought on sale last year. It's not much of an option, but I'm running out of options and I just can't afford right now to shell out another $200 for yet another copy of XP Professional.

Well, sorry to drag that out so long. Any sage advice there, dear reader?
