Microsoft and Channel4: Another letter of Complaint

Homer's picture

I've just read on Digg that Channel4 are going to be offering a content download service. Great eh? Only problem is it's for Windows users only. Hmmm, maybe not so great.

Show your support for this issue at http://slated.org/ch4_microsoft_bias_vote.

So, in that great Slated tradition, I put metaphorical pen to paper, and sent yet another "letter" of complaint ... as follows:

I am extremely disappointed to note that your 4oD service has been restricted to users of Microsoft products. This is a grossly unfair and extremely short-sighted decision on CH4's part.

You state in your 4oD FAQ that: "there is no other Mac-compatible DRM solution which meets the protection requirements of content owners."

This is simply not true. RealNetworks have been providing DRM content for Mac, Linux and Windows users for over a year now, with their Rhapsody service, and I'm sure CH4 could have licensed RealNetworks' technology just as easily as Microsoft's.

By restricting 4oD content to the Windows platform, you are not only losing potential subscribers on other platforms, but also reinforcing Microsoft's already unhealthy dominant share of the market. This is an unnecessary and damaging bias, which only serves to alienate your viewers.

This decision is also not very forward-looking. This year see the release of Windows Vista, which by many accounts is set to be the least popular version of Microsoft's operating system to date, and many such comments come from industry professionals and insiders, who are in a position well qualified to make such statements. As a result, there is likely to be a considerable surge in uptake of other OS platforms in the coming months, and a proportionate drop in Windows users.

Does CH4 really wish to exclude this rapidly growing market?

As a Linux user, this is one potential subscriber that you have lost.

I can only hope that CH4 will seek to reevaluate its misguided decision, in the near future.

Nearly 5 months on...

I want to stop using my Windows XP laptop and convert to Ubuntu Linux, but the only reason I have not done this yet is because I love 4OD and its not available on Linux.

Its great to see this issue has been raised with Channel 4 and that you got a response from them, but do you really think they have taken your comments on board or are their responses just saving their public face?

Channel4's Reply

Thank you for your email regarding 4oD.

Unfortunately we cannot say when the 4oD service will be available to users of other platforms, including Mac OS and Linux. The problem is, our content providers (e.g. the production companies who make our shows), insist on using a DRM licensing system.

The DRM (Digital Rights Management) system basically protects the video content from duplication and broadcast outside the UK & ROI. Currently they insist on using Microsoft's DRM, and because of this we can only support Microsoft operating systems.

Linux currently has no such DRM system available and so our content providers will not allow us to support the Linux operating system. Macintosh do have a solution, however the closed DRM system used by Apple is not currently available for licence by third parties and there is no other Mac-compatible DRM solution which meets the protection requirements of our content owners. Unfortunately, we are therefore unable to offer 4oD and other video content to Mac users at this stage.

We are sorry to disappoint on this occasion and assure you that if changes throughout the industry happen, as we would like, we will ensure the support of other operating systems.

This is just an automated

This is just an automated reply. This is exactly word-for-word what I received when I complained about Channel4's use of Microsoft DRM.

And my response

I appreciate that this was not necessarily CH4's unanimous decision, however CH4 is still in a position to make policy with regards to fair competition, regardless of the "providers" insistence, especially when those decisions might negatively impact the viewers.

Linux currently has no such DRM system

I repeat ... THIS IS NOT TRUE:
Helix.pdf

The Helix DNA framework provides a multi-platform server and client model for the delivery of DRM protected content across many platforms, including Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, and a plethora of mobile devices. This includes secure streaming services.

Perhaps you could enlighten your content providers, and ask them to review RealNetworks' Helix DRM here:
realnetworks.com/products/security/drm/index.html

And note that it specifically lists Mac OS X as a supported client:
realnetworks.com/products/security/drm/specifications.html

And RealNetworks' support for Linux is without equal in the industry:
real.com/linux
https://helix-client.helixcommunity.org

You might also like to remind them that RealNetworks pioneered the streaming media industry, so they are not exactly a second-rate choice.

I have no affiliation to RealNetworks, but I am greatly frustrated by the British media's insistence on excluding Linux and Mac users from their content, especially when there is no rational or technical reason to do so. Under the circumstances, it seems a little too much like a clandestine deal which panders to Microsoft's self-serving agenda of repressing competition, both in terms of content delivery and Operating Systems.

In the interest of fair competition, availability, and accessibility, and most importantly in the best interests of your viewers, I urge you to take action to address these issues.
